Poetry

Year 7 students have been working hard on figurative language in their English lessons. They were recently challenged to transform an abstract noun, such as fear hope or loneliness, into a person. Here are some of our favourites...

Confidence by Beth

Confidence is a tiger, bold and courageous;

She walks with her head held high.

She wears bright colours, has sparkles in her deep eyes.

She loves others: and tells herself: `I can and I will`.

People love to be around her, to not be pressured to change.

Confidence is as daring as a lion

But as happy as a dog.

She is free and loves life.

When she walks into a room people smile

And embrace her sweet smell of new roses.

People understand Confidence as a role model.

She is herself and enjoys it.

Alone Forever by Harry

Happiness does not come to us all. The car had been abandoned it sat here lonely

Waiting to be used once again it felt sorrow for its owner

It was so painfully upset it could no longer be drove

It cares so much for its owner, but he did not care back

Freedom is what the car wanted it wanted to escape

Or it will be left alone forever, there was nothing he could do to escape this abandonment

The paint on the car was so ugly it had been left out forever

The rain poured on this car the wheels were flat it couldn’t move

It has been stuck here forever, the leather on the seats had been churned up

From visitors who were not welcome it was like it was trapped in solitude

Like a broken-down fearful prisoner who had no one to look after it

Happiness was no longer an option for this broken-down car

It was the car who sat in the forest waiting for a new owner.

Anger by Leon

Anger is a fire, raging, strong and powerful.

He is naturally dauntless.

Smooth red skin with flaming hot spikes,

he is angry about a lot of things.

Tall, red, yellow and orange, he stands confidently.

Stomping around like an elephant,

fiery like a blast furnace and hot as the sun,

no one likes him, they are terrified by him.

Stomping, banging, smashing everything and everyone he touches.

Happiness by Abbie

Happiness is a friend, tall, confident and kind.

Calm as the skies above. She smells like flowers

and is as sweet as honey. As she walks flawlessly,

the wind comes with her. Wherever she walks, happiness follows behind this joyful girl.

Anger by Jessica

Anger is like a lemon, bitter and a stinger;

she is horrid in every way.

As she struts her way past, a stench of anger spreads.

In dark, black clothes, like the moonlight, she always tries to pick a fight.

Pride by Genevieve

Pride is perfect as she likes to be,

unbroken nails, hair as black as ebony.

Her eyes like a cat, yellow and cruel.

She likes to think that she's better than you.

Her scent is like roses and honeysuckle,

though sour like an acid's trickle.

She wears purple and gold, as it makes her look regal.

Trying to hide her innermost evil.

She likes attention, she's cold and beguiling.

But her love is directed towards only one thing.

I bet you can't guess who...

She has friends but will bin them for new,

and only if they make her look good,

or fill the gaping hole in her heart with praise.

For pride is only created to hide your inner shame.
