If you are an aspiring engineer then it is probably a good idea to build something. After a clean sweep of A grades in maths, chemistry and physics, Edward Sabey will be building towards his future career by studying chemical engineering at Sheffield University next month.
During his time at the sixth form Ed decided he was going to build something as part of an Extended Project Qualification, but not just anything- a fully functional Pico Hydropower scheme. To the layman, this is something that produces electricity using water to turn a turbine.
Alongside his studies in the classroom, Ed was busy at the family allotment in Cotherstone constructing the equipment to collect rainwater that fell on a rather rickety old shed and channel it to the turbine to generate some electricity. He replaced the shed roof and used some leftover guttering as well as some plastic donated by one of our Assistant Headteachers, Mr Pilling, to make a turbine. The heart of engineering is about problem-solving and Ed overcame several on the way to generating some electricity on the allotment to power an LED.
Ed has shown his commitment to pursuing a future in engineering by undertaking work experiences during his time in sixth form in order to develop his understanding and skills further. At ProPipe Ltd he was able to build a ‘pig’ which is used to clean pipes in the oil industry. He also serviced a gas boiler on a caravan whilst working with a domestic gas company.
Ed also recognised that a successful engineer needs to be a good team player and during his time in the sixth form, as part of his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, he spent time coaching the Year 7 football team. We are incredibly proud of Ed and his outstanding A level results are the culmination of not only some fantastic academic work but also a real commitment to his chosen field.
