Daniel's epic maths result

Did you know there were around 92,000 students who sat their maths A level exams in 2019 and Teesdale Sixth Form's very own Daniel Gaskin was in the top 50 or so!

As we are talking about maths let's have a bit of fun with some numbers...

92,000 seconds represents around 1.06 days or, to put it another way, 25 hours and 33 minutes. So if we had a list of the names of all 92,000 students who sat their A level maths exams this year and read out one name every second in descending order starting with the student who scored the top mark we would get to Daniel in less than a minute. We would still be reading the rest of the list the next day! So Daniel was roughly roughly in the top 0.05%. He has achieved something exceptional!

Head of mathematics, Chris Whitehead, said:

"Daniel is an incredible talent. His amazing performance is not only testament to this talent but also his drive, tenacity and superb work ethic. On top of this he is such a grounded, humble and unassuming young man."

Last year Daniel won the 'Schools' Physicist of 2018' award at The Ogden Trust. After achieving 3A*s in his A levels he is going to be studying maths at Durham Univeristy from September.

Daniel was one among a stellar crop of mathematicians who were stretched and challenged to get the very best results by our dedicated and talented maths teachers.

Time for some more numbers...16.5% of students nationally achieved an A*, the figure was 62.5% for our Year 13 maths cohort of 2019! Every student in the class managed at least a grade A so Daniel is in some very good, well deserving company. Everyone is delighted by these amazing results - particularly the maths department. A very well done to all of our students.

So however you calculate it that is some pretty amazing maths!
