As part of the centenary of the end of WW1, Poetry by Heart has organised a tour to the battlefields in northern France and Belgium to visit the resting places of WW1 poets, including that of Wilfred Owen.
The visit will take place between the 16th and 19th of November with students Jake Knight and Cal Baker representing our school on the tour.
Prior to the visit, students have been encouraged to take part in a legacy project. Jake and Cal are calling their project ‘What does war mean?’ and students in Year 8 will be learning about this in their English lessons. We are also inviting all parents, grandparents and members of the local community to write a poem about what the idea of war means to them. These poems will form the basis of the public presentation that Jake and Cal will make after their visit. Find out more about the poems here.
Some of the places they will visit include Vimy Ridge, Langemark, Neuve Chapelle, Serre Number 2 In Hebuterne, France, which was the inspiration for Wilfred Owen’s ‘The Sentry’ and ‘Exposure.’
