Curriculum information:

Year 7

Learning outcomes

In Year 7, pupils are taught and encouraged to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of familiar contexts, considering their own and others' needs, wants and values.

Topics taught

Project 1 – Using wood as the focus of study, pupils design and construct a tangram puzzle complete with mitered frame. Pupils will be involved with CAD software and will use relevant tools, equipment and processes. There will be a particular focus on safety in the workshop.

Project 2 – Introduction to the world of electronics. Pupils will design and construct a simple LED night light circuit and apply it to a design of a light display. Simulation software will encourage understanding of electronic concepts during the activities.

Year 8

Learning outcomes

In Year 8, pupils are taught and encouraged to develop their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of increasingly unfamiliar contexts, considering their own and others' needs, wants and values.

Topics taught

Project 1 – Using wood as the focus of study, pupils design and construct a “Connect 4” abstract strategy game.  Pupils will be involved with CAD software, and will use relevant tools, equipment and processes. There will be a particular focus on safety in the workshop.

Project 2 – Introduction to the world of electronics. Pupils will design and construct a digital astable (flashing LED) circuit and apply it to a design of a children’s toy. Simulation software will encourage understanding of electronic concepts during the activities.

Year 9

Learning outcomes

In Year 9, students are taught and encouraged to further develop their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of increasingly unfamiliar contexts, considering their own and others' needs, wants and values.

Topics taught

Project 1 – Using wood as the focus of study, pupils design and construct a bird box. Pupils will be involved with CAD software, and will use relevant tools, equipment and processes. There will be a particular focus on safety in the workshop.

Project 2 – Introduction to the world of electronics. Pupils will design and construct an MP3 audio amplifier circuit and apply it to a casing design of their own choice. Simulation software will encourage understanding of electronic concepts during the activities.
